There is a common myth that all old coins, particularly those from the Soviet era, can have high value for collectors. However, most of these coins are actually not particularly valuable and are regarded more as ordinary metal items.

According to Vitaliy Tkach, the editor of the “Coins-Berries” website, numismatists are sometimes willing to buy Soviet coins, but mostly only for a symbolic amount — one hryvnia. Moreover, this is only possible if the coin is in excellent condition, without rust or significant damage.
“This, along with the fact that it may also be tarnished, does not add to its value. On the contrary – it decreases it,” Tkach noted.
The expert emphasized that rusty or heavily damaged specimens completely lose their collectible appeal and are of no interest to numismatists.
Exceptions: Valuable Coins Made of Precious Metals
Despite this, there are some rare Soviet coins on the market that can have significant value. These mainly refer to those specimens made of silver or gold. However, finding such coins in circulation is nearly impossible. They are mostly kept in private collections or museum holdings, and their appearance at auctions generates considerable excitement among specialists.
Thus, owners of Soviet coins should not expect substantial profit from their sale if we are talking about ordinary specimens, rather than unique items made of precious metals.
