A New Phase of Energy Independence
The signing of new agreements between Westinghouse Electric Company and Ukraine’s Energoatom opens up opportunities for the joint production of fuel assemblies for VVER-type reactors. The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine notes that this will be an important step towards enhancing energy security and gradually phasing out Russian supplies of nuclear fuel.
“This agreement is another strategic step towards Ukraine’s energy independence,” said the minister.
Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko emphasized that cooperation with Westinghouse brings Ukraine closer to full energy autonomy. The production of fuel assemblies according to Western standards will ultimately eliminate dependence on Russian fuel sources.
Certification and Future Development
Earlier this year, one of Energoatom’s plants received official certification from Westinghouse as a manufacturer of components for VVER-1000 reactors. This event marked the starting point for the implementation of high-tech nuclear fuel production directly in Ukraine.
As part of further cooperation, the construction of nine modern next-generation III+ type reactors is planned. These reactors are distinguished by the use of a passive safety system, modular design, and increased efficiency, which will contribute to the further strengthening of the country’s energy infrastructure.
