In Ukraine, as of April 1, 2026, general mobilization continues under martial law, covering conscripted men aged 18 to 60. The main criteria for conscription remain not only age but also health status, possession of military or civilian specialties, and the absence of legal grounds for deferment.

Who Can Be Mobilized After Age 50
All conscripted individuals who do not have a reservation or official deferment and are deemed fit for service by the military medical commission are subject to mobilization. Priority is given to those who are registered with the military and possess skills or experience necessary for the army. This includes individuals with combat experience as well as civilians with professions that may be useful in the military — for example, in logistics, technical support, medicine, communications, or management.
Age alone is not the sole basis for conscription. Men over the age of 50 can also be mobilized if the military medical commission deems them fit or partially fit for service, and their professional skills meet the needs of the army. This means that the mobilization of Ukrainians at 55 or even 60 years old is legal and possible.
Requirements and Features of Mobilization for Citizens Aged 50+
For men over 50, there are specific features regarding service. Typically, they are involved in tasks within rear units, supply divisions, training centers, or administrative structures, where experience, professional knowledge, and organizational skills are particularly valued. Distribution is carried out individually, taking into account the needs of the Armed Forces and the personal characteristics of each conscript.
At the same time, there are categories of citizens who are exempt from mobilization. These include individuals who have legal grounds for deferment — particularly due to family circumstances, health status, or work at critically important enterprises. For such cases, the issuance of reservations is provided. Citizens deemed unfit for service due to health by the military medical commission are also exempt from conscription. The decision of the military medical commission is decisive in this matter.
“Age is not the sole basis for determining fitness for service. Men over 50 can also be mobilized on general grounds. If the military medical commission deems an individual fit or partially fit, and their professional skills meet the needs of the army, they may be directed for service. This means that mobilization at 55 or even closer to 60 years old is legal and possible.”
Currently, the Ukrainian government is working on improving the mobilization process to make it fairer and minimize conflicts. It is expected that the first developments regarding new rules will emerge as early as April.
