MetaMask to Fix Critical Bug Causing Excessive Data Writing on SSD

The MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet extension for browsers has come under scrutiny from users due to a serious bug that leads to continuous writing of gigabytes of data to solid-state drives (SSD). Such abnormal activity can significantly shorten the lifespan of the device or even cause it to fail.

What is the MetaMask Issue

The bug was discovered in the MetaMask versions for Chromium-based browsers, including Google Chrome and Opera. According to a user with the nickname ripper31337, who left a corresponding ticket on GitHub, the extension can write up to 500 GB of information per day. The data is stored in the Local Extension Setting folder, in files such as 011717.log, 011719.ldb, and MANIFEST-000001.

According to discussions, the continuous writing occurs at a rate of up to 5 MB/s, creating excessive strain on the SSD. Users note that this causes their computers to slow down, and the issue began to manifest about a month ago, although the first mentions of it appeared as early as March 2025.

Developers’ Response and Temporary Solution

“While cryptocurrency wallet extensions regularly write state to disk, which is expected behavior, we have taken note of the recent observation shared by several MetaMask users who reported unusually high plugin activity,” they stated.

At Consensys, the company developing MetaMask, they confirmed that they are aware of the bug and are working on a fix. According to them, the issue has affected only a small portion of users. The developers plan to optimize the size of each write and reduce the frequency of data writing to minimize the load on the drives. However, for now, the only verified way to resolve the issue remains to completely uninstall the MetaMask extension from the browser.

An update with the critical bug fix is expected to be released soon, although specific timelines have not been provided.

It is worth noting that MetaMask recently also added support for the Solana network.
