Meta Corporation and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg are suspected of possible coordination with Elon Musk and xAI regarding the acquisition of OpenAI — the developer of ChatGPT. OpenAI is demanding that Meta provide documents that could confirm participation in negotiations to purchase the company for $97 billion, which Musk discussed in February 2025.

OpenAI Demands Documents Regarding Meta and xAI Negotiations
As part of the legal proceedings between Elon Musk and OpenAI, the company’s lawyers have filed an official request with Meta. They are asking for evidence of coordinated actions or discussions between representatives of Meta, Musk, and xAI regarding the acquisition or investment in OpenAI. According to case materials, a similar request was made in June 2025, but it is currently unknown whether relevant documents exist.
Meta Denies Its Involvement, Analysts Speak of Competition
Elon Musk’s defenders claim that negotiations with Zuckerberg concerned not only xAI’s proposal to purchase OpenAI but also potential financial agreements. Meanwhile, Meta publicly denies any involvement in such negotiations and states that it has not signed any letters of intent from Musk.
Meta, for its part, responded that it did not participate in such contacts and did not sign Musk’s letter of intent.
The legal dispute also concerns the transformation of OpenAI from a commercial entity into a public corporation to attract investors and go public. Musk is contesting this transformation, considering it a violation of the company’s mission. OpenAI insists that Meta provide all documents related to any potential restructuring or recapitalization of the company. Meta, however, is asking the court to dismiss these demands, arguing that the necessary information can be provided by Musk and xAI themselves, and that Meta’s internal discussions regarding the restructuring of OpenAI are not relevant to the case.
Analysts note that Meta is actively investing in its own artificial intelligences and poaching leading specialists from OpenAI, including ChatGPT researchers. This, in their opinion, indicates an intensification of competition in the artificial intelligence market and the seriousness of Meta’s intentions in this field.
It was previously reported that the ChatGPT mobile application has generated approximately $2 billion for OpenAI since its launch.
