Ceremony Attended by Chechen Volunteers and Government Representatives

Present at the opening ceremony were the Prime Minister of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in exile, Akhmed Zakayev, Chechen volunteers defending Ukraine, local government representatives, and numerous residents of the city. The ceremony began with the performance of national anthems and prayers conducted by an imam and a Greek Catholic priest. Akhmed Zakayev expressed gratitude to the Lviv community for preserving the memory of the leader of the Chechen people.

“We are not just unveiling a plaque on a facade, but opening another door to the historical memory of Europe. In this most challenging time for Ukraine, you find the strength not only to fight but also to remember, not only to defend your cities but to affirm the moral essence of your struggle. This is a sign of the political maturity of a nation, a sign of true European culture of memory,” said Akhmed Zakayev during his speech.

According to Zakayev, this event holds special significance for the Chechen people, as “a nation whose hero is remembered by other nations does not remain alone with its history.” He emphasized the symbolic responsibility to continue the cause of freedom, to not recognize violence as a norm of international politics, and to not justify the crimes of empires under the guise of geopolitics or historical necessity. The memory of Dzhokhar Dudayev, he stated, should lead to a future that requires the courage to call things by their names.

Dzhokhar Dudayev: A Symbol of Independence and Struggle

Dzhokhar Dudayev was a prominent military and political figure, the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which fought for independence from Russia in the 1990s. Before the collapse of the USSR, he held the rank of Major General in the Soviet Army Air Force. On April 21, 1996, Dudayev was killed in a missile strike from a Russian Su-25 aircraft. In the same year, a street in Lviv was renamed in honor of Dzhokhar Dudayev.
