Circumstances of the Drone Explosion in Kozacha Lopan

According to official information, the incident took place on April 16. Two local residents — a 49-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman — attempted to lift a Russian drone that had been lying on one of the village streets for several days. During these actions, the device suddenly exploded. The man suffered fatal shrapnel wounds and died at the scene, while the woman was thrown several meters by the blast wave, resulting in multiple injuries and an open fracture of her leg.

“As a result of these reckless actions, the drone detonated: the man died on the spot from shrapnel wounds, and the woman was thrown several meters by the blast wave — she sustained numerous shrapnel injuries to her body and an open fracture of her leg.”

The injured woman was evacuated and hospitalized the following day. Her condition is currently stable, and her life is not in danger. Due to the complicated evacuation situation, the body of the deceased was buried in Kozacha Lopan.

Ongoing Threat to Civilians and Calls for Caution

The head of the Derhachi city military administration emphasized the necessity of not touching any suspicious objects, including drones, mines, remnants of missiles, and other explosive munitions. In particular, he urged residents of frontline areas to refrain from reckless actions that could lead to tragic consequences for life and health.

Russian military forces continue to attack Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using various types of weapons — strike drones, missiles, aerial bombs, and multiple launch rocket systems. Such actions have repeatedly been classified by Ukrainian authorities and international organizations as war crimes committed by the Russian Federation, characterized by a deliberate and systematic nature.

Civilians are caught in the crossfire of life-support systems and medical facilities, depriving them of access to electricity, heat, water, communication, and medical assistance. Experts, human rights defenders, and genocide researchers believe that such actions are manifestations of genocidal policy. Among the signs of genocide, international legal documents highlight the deliberate creation of conditions aimed at the destruction of a population, the killing of members of national groups, and the prevention of childbirth.

The leadership of the Russian Federation denies involvement in targeted attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and population; however, the facts continue to testify otherwise.
