Leading Economies of the World Cut Aid to Other Countries for Defense

This trend is reflected in the Commitment to Development Index, which analyzes 38 leading economies based on over a hundred different indicators.

European Countries Maintain Leadership, US Loses Ground

According to the latest data, the top positions in the ranking of global program funding are currently held by Northern European countries, including Sweden, Germany, Norway, and Finland. The United Kingdom has risen to fifth place, but this trend may be short-lived as the government plans to cut aid volumes by another 40%.

Meanwhile, the United States has already dropped two places in the ranking and currently occupies the 28th position. Experts emphasize that this figure does not account for significant cuts to aid that were announced following Donald Trump’s presidency.

“Experts note that funding for aid and development is being reduced by many leading economies in favor of defense spending. For countries that heavily rely on external financial assistance (including Ukraine), this is a troubling signal, as competition for donor funds will become fiercer.”

Increased Defense Investment Changes the Global Financial Landscape

The shift in financial policy priorities among the world’s leading countries indicates a focus on protecting national interests and strengthening defense capabilities. As a result, countries that have traditionally relied on foreign support may face intensified competition for limited resources. Experts emphasize that for Ukraine, this serves as an important warning about the need to diversify funding sources and strengthen its own economic resilience.
