The cost of a single trip on public transport in Kyiv is set to rise to 30 UAH. The Kyiv City State Administration notes that the new fare has been calculated based on the actual costs of transport enterprises for the year 2025. The last fare review took place in 2018, and since then, the cost of transportation has significantly increased.

Main Reasons for the Increase in Fare
The Kyiv authorities explain that the fare increase is a necessary step due to the significant rise in key resources needed to ensure stable transport operations. Additionally, passenger traffic has decreased by 42% compared to 2018. During this period:
- The cost of electricity for transport enterprises has increased by 6.6 times — from 2.25 to 14.93 UAH per kWh,
- Diesel fuel for buses of “Kyivpastrans” has risen by 3.7 times — from 24.26 to 89.42 UAH per liter,
- The average salary in the capital has increased by 3.7 times (from 13,548 to 49,381 UAH), which necessitates raising wages to avoid a shortage of qualified personnel,
- The overall consumer price index has risen by 133.5%.
Economic Justification and Possible Consequences
The Kyiv City Administration emphasizes that setting the fare at 30 UAH is a compromise solution, as the economically justified cost of travel for 2026 is at least 64.60 UAH for the metro and 44.14 UAH for surface transport (buses, trolleybuses, trams, funicular).
“If the fare remains at 8 UAH, the city will be forced to cover the billion-dollar losses of transport operators from the local budget. This means that funds will have to be taken from other critical areas, including programs for restoring energy infrastructure and preparing for winter.”
Insufficient funding will lead to increased intervals for transport services, deterioration of the technical condition of buses and cars, reduced repairs, and an even greater outflow of drivers and operators.
It should be noted that in Lviv, starting from May 16, 2026, the cost of a single trip on public transport has also increased to 26 UAH when paying with a bank card and 30 UAH when paying in cash.
