Ireland Reduces Free Accommodation Period for Ukrainians to 30 Days

Ірландії скорочує термін безкоштовного проживання для українців

The Irish government has decided to reduce the period of free accommodation in state-provided housing for newly arrived Ukrainian citizens from 90 to 30 days. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of the refugee placement system and ensure availability for all those seeking asylum in the country.

Reasons for Changes in Placement Policy

According to estimates by the Irish government, if around 50 new individuals arrive in the country daily, the reserve of accommodation places could be fully utilized by the end of the current month. This has prompted a review of the rules to prevent a shortage of housing for newcomers.

Introduction of New Contributions for Employed Ukrainians

In addition to shortening the free accommodation period, the Irish government plans to introduce weekly contributions for those Ukrainians who are already employed but continue to use state housing. The amount of the contribution will depend on income levels and may range from 15 to 238 euros per week.

“Ultimately, this will be a government decision, but we recommend these proposals and consider them appropriate,” said Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan.

As reported by Jim O’Callaghan, there has been a significant increase in the flow of Ukrainian citizens to Ireland since September. Since 2022, over 100,000 individuals have arrived in the country, of which about 80,000 remain in Ireland and continue to receive state support.
