Industrial Investments in Environmental Protection in Ukraine Increase After Decline

Expenditures by Ukrainian industry on environmental protection significantly decreased due to the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. In 2022, current expenditures on environmental measures fell to $746 million compared to $1.1 billion in 2021, while the volume of capital investments dropped from $517 million to $199 million.

Gradual Recovery of Expenditures and Investments

Recent years have shown a gradual recovery in environmental expenditures. In 2024, current expenditures reached $864 million, while capital investments amounted to $194 million. One of the key sectors investing in environmental protection measures is the extraction of metal ores, which accounts for 19% of all environmental expenditures in the country. Metallurgy represents 8.6% of the structure of these expenditures.

Trends in Expenditures in Metallurgy and Ore Extraction

In 2024, metal ore extraction enterprises increased their environmental protection expenditures by 12% compared to 2022, reaching $202 million. In contrast, the metallurgy sector, which lost some assets due to the war, reduced its environmental expenditures from $130 million to $90 million. The volume of capital investments in environmental protection amounted to $38.2 million in ore extraction and $42.2 million in metallurgy.

To implement the environmental protection plans already announced by Ukrainian metallurgy companies, $11 billion in investments is needed.
