The National Bank of Ukraine set a new official dollar exchange rate on January 12 at 43 hryvnias and 7.57 kopecks. This is a record low for the hryvnia against the American currency, marking the fifth consecutive update of the anti-record this week.

Currency Market Dynamics in January 2026
The first days of January showed a significant weakening of the national currency. In particular, after trading on January 5, the hryvnia exchange rate hit a historic low for the first time this year, and by January 6, the rate was recorded at 42 hryvnias and 42.08 kopecks per dollar. Since then, the hryvnia has lost more than 1.5% of its value against the US dollar.
According to Bloomberg, as a result of trading on the interbank currency market on January 9, trading ended at 43 hryvnias and 13.5 kopecks per dollar.
Historical Context of Changes in the Official Exchange Rate
The official hryvnia exchange rate remained stable for over 14 months, starting from July 21, 2022, at 36 hryvnias and 57 kopecks per dollar. Only on October 3, 2023, did the rate begin to change, marking the start of a gradual weakening of the national currency amid current economic challenges.
