France and the United Kingdom have announced a major modernization of the Storm Shadow and SCALP-EG cruise missiles, which are widely used in modern armed conflicts. The primary goal of the upgrade is to enhance targeting accuracy by improving guidance systems, particularly through the modernization of GPS and the implementation of new thermal imaging cameras. This is expected to enable the missiles to identify targets more effectively and accurately, as well as adjust their course during flight.

Technical Features of the Upgrade and Strategic Importance
The Mk2 version is expected to involve no changes to the body design, meaning that the modernization can be implemented on existing munitions. This approach allows for significant cost savings and a rapid increase in the combat effectiveness of the arsenals of France and the United Kingdom. There has been no official confirmation from the defense ministries of either country regarding the start of development, however, it was announced back in the summer of 2022 that production of these missiles would be resumed.
“Information about the new modification also underscores the importance of increasing production capacities in Europe, especially in light of the growing demand for defense technologies amid the war in Ukraine.”
Impact on the EU Arms Market and Political Discussions
The Storm Shadow project has been updated multiple times over the past few years, extending the service life of the missiles. At the same time, discussions within the European Union have intensified regarding funding for Ukraine’s defense needs through a joint European loan. The main disputes concern the possibility of purchasing weapons that are not produced within the EU, which could affect the pace of supplies and the modernization of the arsenal to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
