Four out of nine energy units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants were forced to reduce their output due to a large-scale missile attack by the Russian Federation that occurred on the morning of November 19.

Reduction in Generation at Key Nuclear Power Plants
As a result of the shelling, three major nuclear power plants — Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine — limited their electricity generation. According to Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, these facilities had to take this step due to the loss of access to high-voltage power lines that were damaged during the attack.
In particular, Khmelnytskyi and Rivne Nuclear Power Plants had been operating at reduced capacity since the beginning of November due to the impact of military actions. However, following the latest attack, both stations further decreased their electricity production as they lost one high-voltage power line each. A similar issue was noted at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, which also lost one of its key energy channels.
Impact of Military Actions on the Energy System
“Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is not the only facility affected by the instability of the power grid. Military actions continue to impact the energy system across Ukraine,” Grossi added.
Thus, the recent Russian shelling has led to a significant reduction in electricity production at Ukrainian nuclear power plants, complicating the stable operation of the country’s energy system amid the ongoing war.
