Dollars with President Trump’s Signature to Appear in the U.S. for the First Time

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced its intention to feature the signature of current President Donald Trump on all new paper dollars. This will be an unprecedented step in the history of the United States, as previously only the signatures of the Secretary of the Treasury and the Treasurer were included on banknotes.

The department noted that the initiative is linked to the celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary. In addition to the president’s signature, the signature of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen will remain on the banknotes. Officials from the Treasury emphasized that this move aims to highlight the historical significance of the era.

Bessen, commenting on the innovation, stated: “There is no more powerful way to celebrate the historical achievements of our great country.”

U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach also supported the initiative, calling it “not only appropriate but also entirely deserved.” At the same time, attempts to place the signature or image of the sitting president on currency have sparked discussions, as federal law prohibits the use of portraits of living presidents on money.

Criticism and Public Reaction

The plans of the financial department have received mixed reactions from the public, particularly among the opposition. Some Democrats criticized the idea due to its symbolism amidst a challenging economic situation: rising fuel and food prices, as well as instability caused by the war in the Middle East.

Ohio Representative Shontel Brown called this initiative “disgusting and un-American.” She noted:

“But at least it will remind us who to thank when we pay more for gasoline, goods, and groceries,” Brown stated.

Additionally, according to Reuters, the new banknotes may be issued for the first time in 165 years without the signature of the U.S. Treasurer. The first to appear will be $100 bills with the president’s signature as early as June, with an expansion of the series expected in the coming months.

It is worth noting that in December, Donald Trump announced the construction of two of the largest battleships that will bear his name.
