EU Delays Response to Trump’s Tariffs Until NATO Summit

Capitals of the European Union are urging Brussels to refrain from urgent measures in response to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump until the NATO summit, which will take place on June 24-25. The EU believes that the main priority should be to reach an agreement with the U.S. president regarding Europe’s security in the medium term.

European governments are strongly calling for a pause in making any significant decisions related to the U.S., particularly in the area of substantial defense investments. This decision will remain in effect until the outcomes of the NATO meeting in The Hague next month become clear.

Avoiding Confrontation

Additionally, NATO officials are urging a reduction in the summit’s agenda to minimize the risk of conflicts with Trump amid uncertainty regarding his potential actions at the event. Trump demands that European allies commit to spending 5% of GDP on defense, equalizing the responsibility for the continent’s security, which has rested on the U.S. for decades.

“Ahead of The Hague, we are very nervous, and the general sentiment is: do everything possible to get Trump there, tell him what he wants to hear, and send him back without any disasters,” said one EU official.
