Damage Level of Ukrainian Thermal Power Plants: Why Power Outage Schedules Are Intensifying

As the cold weather sets in, Ukrainians may face stricter electricity outage schedules. The reason for this is the significant damage sustained by Ukrainian thermal power plants (TPPs) due to strikes from Russian occupying forces. As a result, many facilities are unable to generate sufficient electricity, complicating the provision of stable power supply.

What is the Condition of Ukrainian TPPs After the Attacks

According to energy expert Yuriy Korolchuk, the vast majority of TPPs are not completely shut down; however, the level of damage at various facilities ranges from 30% to 70%. Some infrastructure remains operational, but its capacity has been significantly reduced.

“Regarding the destruction of TPPs – it cannot be said that they are 90% unable to operate. There are facilities with damage at the corresponding level – somewhere between 30% and 70%. But there are facilities that remain operational,” said Korolchuk.

The Complexity of Destroying Large Energy Facilities

Thermal power plants are large infrastructure complexes that occupy significant territory, making their complete destruction quite a challenging task even with massive missile strikes. However, despite this, the volume of electricity production at TPPs has noticeably decreased, limiting their role in ensuring the energy stability of the country.

Experts note that further attacks or worsening weather conditions could lead to even stricter electricity supply restrictions for consumers. The Ukrainian energy system is currently operating under high stress, and restoring damaged facilities requires significant resources and time.
