US Congress Plans New Sanctions Against Russia in the Coming Weeks

Конгрес США готовий найближчими тижнями ухвалити нові санкції проти РФ.

American lawmakers from both political parties have expressed their readiness to pass an additional package of sanctions against the Russian Federation immediately after the parliamentary recess, which will last for a few more weeks.

The Position of US Leaders on Sanctions Against Russia

The intensification of sanctions pressure has become relevant following a series of meetings between US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and representatives of the European community. Despite the lack of a final agreement on ending the war in Ukraine, Trump emphasized that the main points of the agreement have already been coordinated, and a final decision could be made soon.

Reactions from Senators and Expected Actions

Senate Majority Leader John Thune stressed that Congress is prepared to provide the administration with all necessary economic tools to influence Russia and compel it to remain at the negotiating table for a “fair and lasting peace”. At the same time, Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen sharply criticized Trump’s position regarding the reluctance to hold Putin accountable after the negotiations, emphasizing that in the absence of active presidential actions, it is Congress that must impose strict restrictions against Russia.

She stated that as long as the Kremlin continues to abduct Ukrainian children and kill civilians, normal relations with Russia are impossible.

The new package of sanctions is expected to be a response to Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine and could be approved in the coming weeks after American lawmakers return to work.
