The Higher Regional Court of Vienna has made a final decision regarding the long-standing case concerning the extradition of Ukrainian businessman Dmytro Firtash to the United States. The court refused to consider the appeal against the previous denial of Firtash’s extradition, leading to the closure of a case that has lasted over 12 years.

Reasons for Closing the Court Proceedings
The appeal process was rendered impossible due to the expiration of procedural deadlines. The Vienna Prosecutor’s Office failed to submit an appeal against the extradition denial by November 2024. Despite attempts to restore the deadlines through a relevant motion, the court categorically refused to grant it.
Consequences of the Court’s Decision
According to Austrian law, further appeal against the decision to deny the extension of the deadline is not provided for. Thus, this decision effectively puts an end to the long-standing case regarding the extradition of Dmytro Firtash to the USA.
“Under Austrian law, the decision to deny the extension of the deadline cannot be appealed: most likely, this will be the final decision in Firtash’s case.”
The final closure of the case means that Firtash will not be extradited to the United States, and the legal procedures regarding this matter are concluded.
