Lithuania Expands Opportunities for National Sanctions
On the same day, the Seimas of Lithuania made a final decision allowing the country’s government to impose national economic sanctions against Russia and Belarus. The new mechanism provides for the possibility of freezing the assets of sanctioned individuals and companies, as well as introducing sectoral restrictions. In particular, it concerns the prohibition of importing technologies, services, and software from Russia and Belarus, as well as exporting these products to prevent their use by the armed forces of both states.
Germany and Slovakia’s Position on Sanctions
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need to intensify economic pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. He called on the United States to impose additional sanctions following the European Union.
Sectoral sanctions aim to prohibit the import of technologies, services, and software from Russia and Belarus, as well as the export of these products for use by Russian or Belarusian armed forces.
At the same time, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that his country will not currently support the new EU sanctions package. He insists on postponing the vote until the issue of gas supply after 2027 is resolved.
