Asparagus harvest in Ukraine affected by cold spring and strong winds

The asparagus harvesting season in Ukraine has been threatened even before the official start. An unusually cold April with prolonged periods of low temperatures and strong winds has negatively impacted the development of the crop.

This is reported by Finway

“Temperatures around −5…−7 °C combined with winds proved critical even for those producers who adhered to protection technologies — using coverings and investing in crop preservation. As a result, it was impossible to completely avoid losses.”

According to Professor Tetiana Ivchenko from the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of NAAS, many farms suffered damage precisely during the period when the plants were supposed to begin active growth. Even those farmers who took protective measures could not fully safeguard their crops from weather shocks, and losses became inevitable.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the start of the asparagus season in most regions of Ukraine is being postponed. The first products are expected to appear on the market only in the first decade of May, which is significantly later than usual.

Crop losses and changes in production approaches

It is preliminarily estimated that farmers will lose at least 30% of the early asparagus harvest. The early hybrids suffered the most, as they proved sensitive to sharp cold spells, while later varieties withstood climatic stress better, as they had not yet entered the phase of active vegetation.

There is a trend towards revising cultivation strategies: producers are increasingly focusing on diversifying varieties and reducing dependence on a single seasonal development scenario. This approach may enhance the resilience of farms to future climatic challenges.

However, in addition to weather risks, farmers are facing economic difficulties. Due to the decrease in the purchasing power of the population, prices for asparagus do not always cover the costs of its cultivation. This intensifies the financial pressure on producers who have already suffered from crop losses.

Agricultural sector: challenges of 2026

The current situation with asparagus in 2026 once again demonstrates the high dependence of agriculture on weather conditions. Modern agricultural technologies, even when properly applied, cannot fully protect the harvest from climatic anomalies.

Farmers are forced to quickly adapt to new climatic and economic realities. Today, a key task for agricultural enterprises is not only to grow products but also to withstand constant risks and instability in the industry.
