The European Union has agreed to coordinate its actions with the United States regarding the introduction of new sanctions against the Russian Federation in order to increase pressure on the Kremlin regime and prompt Vladimir Putin to engage in peace negotiations. This was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who noted that preparations are currently underway for the eighteenth package of anti-Russian restrictions.

Main Highlights of the New EU Sanctions Package
The key objective of the new sanctions will be the energy sector of Russia, as well as the closure of the main financial channels of the aggressor country. Special attention is planned to be given to companies connected with the “Nord Stream” pipelines, as well as initiating an additional reduction of the maximum price for Russian oil.
“We are primarily interested in sanctions against energy and closing off funding sources for Russia,” added the head of the European Commission.
Problematic Issues and Positions of Individual EU Countries
Despite the desire for synchronization of actions with the US, the EU has expressed concerns regarding the proposed 500% tariffs included in the American sanctions package. European countries emphasize that some EU members still import Russian energy resources, while actively supporting Ukraine at the same time. In this regard, the EU insists on providing exemptions from the sanctions restrictions to avoid negative impacts on their own economies. The initiator of the sanctions bill, Senator Lindsey Graham, has already suggested taking these concerns into account and allowing changes to the relevant legislation.
At the same time, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reported that Germany may soon announce new strict sanctions against Russia.
