Alexandria in Scotland: How a Ghost Town Became a Symbol of Decline and History

The Past and Present of Alexandria

Alexandria is a post-industrial settlement with a rich history, once renowned for its industry. Once considered prosperous and dynamic, today it is strikingly neglected: empty storefronts, closed shops, and on the main streets, one can see buildings with boarded-up windows. The gray facades and lack of life create a sense that Alexandria’s golden days are long gone.

“Unofficially, it is considered the most depressing and poorest town in Scotland, so no one would recommend coming here. It seems to be frozen in time, somewhere between the 1980s and 1990s. This is Alexandria, which officially belongs to a region that is one of the least affluent in Scotland,” Alina shares.

Historical Heritage and Industrial Development

Alexandria has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. At that time, the town was a significant center for cotton and thread production, with local factories supplying goods to the entire world. A true pride of Alexandria was the Argyle car factory, one of the most technologically advanced in Europe in the early 20th century. The factory produced premium Scottish Argyle cars, distinguished by cutting-edge technologies: it was the first in the world to implement a short braking distance and brakes on all four wheels. Expensive metals and manual labor were used in production. Although the company eventually went bankrupt, the factory building has survived to this day.

Today, the main advantage of the town remains its picturesque location by one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in Great Britain — Loch Lomond. This spot attracts tourists, even though the town appears neglected.

According to Alina, on the main streets, one can see abandoned shops, and there is an atmosphere of tranquility and nostalgia for the past times.
