Ukraine attracts 54 million euros for the modernization and energy independence of Ukrzaliznytsia

An agreement has been signed in Kyiv to provide grant support for the development of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” with the participation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union. The total funding amounts to 54 million euros, and these investments will become part of a large-scale program for the restoration and modernization of Ukraine’s transport infrastructure.

Modernization of railway infrastructure

The funds will primarily be directed towards updating passenger infrastructure. Plans include the renovation of train stations and terminals in key transport hubs in Kyiv and Lviv, the installation of modern elevators and escalators, the creation of barrier-free platforms for people with reduced mobility, as well as the implementation of intuitive navigation for passenger convenience.

Energy independence and resilience enhancement

The main part of the financial package will be aimed at increasing the energy independence of the railway system. In particular, it is planned to install gas piston power plants with a total capacity of about 75 MW. Such installations will ensure the uninterrupted operation of the railway even in the event of emergencies, power outages, or attacks on energy infrastructure, thereby reducing dependence on the central grid. This step is part of the transition to a distributed generation model for the entire railway sector.

A separate component of the program involves the development of human capital within “Ukrzaliznytsia”. Specifically, plans include the launch of an internal academy, the introduction of new training standards, modern management programs, and special training tracks for veterans.

Thus, “Ukrzaliznytsia” remains a critical support for the country – providing transportation, evacuation, and the functioning of the economy. Therefore, investments in its development are viewed not only as an infrastructure project but as part of the overall security and resilience system of the state.

Previously, all passenger trains of “Ukrzaliznytsia” were already equipped with additional inventory for emergencies. Train crews received special equipment that allows for faster and safer organization of passenger evacuation if necessary.
