The First International Trains with European Gauge Launched in Ukraine

For the first time in Ukraine, direct international passenger trains of European standard gauge 1435 mm have begun to operate. This new connection allows travel to cities in the European Union — Bratislava, Budapest, and Vienna. Ticket prices start from 2232 to 3525 hryvnias, making travel accessible for Ukrainians to famous European centers.

Details of the Launch of the New European Gauge

The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development reported that this section became the first in the history of independent Ukraine built “from scratch” according to European standards of track width. The new routes are serviced by trains No. 961/618 Uzhhorod – Bratislava and No. 146 Uzhhorod – Budapest – Vienna. The first passengers to use the new international railway route were 280 people.

Schedule and Ticket Prices

  • Train No. 961/618 Uzhhorod – Bratislava: Departure from Uzhhorod at 8:09, arrival in Bratislava at 18:33. Return trip from Bratislava at 11:27, arrival in Uzhhorod at 22:35. The ticket price for the trip on September 23 is 2232.16 UAH.
  • Train No. 146 Uzhhorod – Budapest – Vienna: From Uzhhorod at 8:09, arriving in Budapest at 14:20, finishing the route in Vienna at 17:20. Return route: from Vienna at 10:42, Budapest at 13:19, arriving in Uzhhorod at 22:35. The ticket price for the trip on September 26 is 3525.89 UAH.

Since September 12, a new domestic route No. 644/647 Zakhon – Berehove – Borzhava with a European gauge of 1435 mm has been operating. It directly connects Berehove with Zakhon, which is a key transfer hub for numerous trains across Hungary, including to the capital — Budapest.

In December, with the update of the schedule, new connections with domestic routes are expected to be launched. In particular, there will be more night trains, allowing passengers to conveniently transfer to European routes.
