Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will visit Moscow on May 9; however, he does not plan to participate in the Victory Day military parade. The main purpose of the Slovak Prime Minister’s visit to the capital of the Russian Federation will be to lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is traditionally located near the Kremlin wall in Alexander Garden – this is the memorial that Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin regularly visits.

Details of the Slovak Prime Minister’s Visit
Before traveling to Moscow, Robert Fico plans to attend an informal summit in Cyprus focused on international political issues and strengthening the European Union. After that, he will head to Russia, where, according to Slovak media, he will limit himself to a symbolic flower-laying ceremony, not joining the official parade events of the aggressor country.
Political Context and Legal Challenges
The situation surrounding Robert Fico remains tense: the Slovak police have launched an investigation against him on suspicion of treason and a number of other crimes. Additionally, the Slovak government recently filed a lawsuit with the European Union Court to challenge the decision to ban the import of Russian gas, which was supported by a qualified majority in the EU.
During last year’s parade in Moscow, Vladimir Putin showcased military equipment to Chinese leader Xi Jinping, including armored vehicles, Iskander-M missile systems, and various types of drones used in the war against Ukraine. Special attention was drawn to the black “Geran” drones, which Xi Jinping examined with interest.
In addition, in 2025, Vladimir Putin announced a ceasefire for Victory Day on April 28. He stated that the Russian side would halt all hostilities from midnight on May 7 to midnight on May 10.
