Loss Estimates and Reactions from Both Sides

Russia does not officially disclose its losses. The last time Moscow provided data was in September 2022, when it reported 5,937 military personnel killed. However, according to independent counts by journalists from the BBC Russian Service, Mediazona, and volunteers, as of April 2026, the names of at least 212,188 deceased Russian servicemen have been confirmed through open sources.

“As of April 2026, journalists from the BBC Russian Service and Mediazona, together with a team of volunteers, have confirmed the names of at least 212,188 Russian servicemen who have died in the war against Ukraine since February 2022. This refers to those whose names have been verified in open sources.”

International organizations and intelligence agencies cite even higher figures. In particular, in December 2025, a senior NATO official reported that, according to the alliance, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could reach 1.15 million individuals.

Ukraine has also not disclosed its losses for a long time, stating that this information would be made public after the war’s conclusion. Since the beginning of 2026, President Volodymyr Zelensky has provided relevant information annually. In February, Zelensky reported that since February 2022, Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers killed. He also mentioned that a significant number of individuals remain missing.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi noted that in 2025, the number of Ukrainian military casualties was reduced by 13%, although he did not disclose detailed information.
