Pakistan Allocates 2000 MW for Bitcoin Mining and Artificial Intelligence

Pakistan has announced the launch of a large-scale program to support Bitcoin mining and the development of data centers, allocating 2000 MW of electricity for this purpose.

This initiative aims not only to attract investments but also to legalize cryptocurrencies and create new jobs.

New Opportunities for the Crypto Industry

The Government of Pakistan has announced the first phase of a national program to support the cryptocurrency industry. According to Bloomberg, the allocated electricity will be used for Bitcoin mining and the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to legalize cryptocurrencies and attract foreign investments, coordinated by the Pakistan Crypto Council with the support of the Ministry of Finance.

According to expert estimates, the implementation of the project will not only help monetize excess energy but also create well-paying jobs in the technology sector. The program plans to utilize the Sahiwal, China Hub, and Port Qasim coal-fired power plants, which are currently operating at only 15% of their capacity.

“The federal government of Pakistan aims to attract investments to strengthen an economy that nearly defaulted in 2023. It is estimated that there are between 15 to 20 million cryptocurrency users in the country. Now, the authorities intend to create a regulatory framework for the development of the local crypto ecosystem and attract global capital,” Bloomberg noted.

Interest from International Companies

The Ministry of Finance reported that Pakistan has already attracted the attention of international miners and companies specializing in data processing infrastructure. However, specific company names have not yet been disclosed.

It is worth noting that in early April 2025, former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao was appointed as a member of Pakistan’s Cryptocurrency Council.
