The National Bank of Ukraine has set the official exchange rate of the hryvnia at 42 hryvnias 99.04 kopecks per dollar as of January 9. This marks the fourth consecutive instance this week where the hryvnia’s exchange rate against the dollar has reached a new low, demonstrating further weakening of the national currency.

Exchange Rate Dynamics at the Start of the Year
After the trading session on January 5, the hryvnia reached a new historical low for the first time this year. As of January 6, the official exchange rate was 42 hryvnias 42.08 kopecks per dollar. Since then, the rate has weakened further, with the hryvnia losing over 1% of its value against the US dollar.
Situation on the Interbank Market
According to Bloomberg data, on January 8, trading on the Ukrainian interbank currency market closed at 43 hryvnias 7.5 kopecks per dollar as of 15:30.
“On October 3, 2023, the exchange rate shifted for the first time since July 21, 2022. For more than 14 months, the official rate had been maintained at 36 hryvnias 57 kopecks per dollar.”
Thus, the national currency continues to show a downward trend in January 2026, which affects financial stability and currency expectations.
