The National Bank of Ukraine has announced the release of a new commemorative coin dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Simon Petliura’s Memorial Day — a prominent leader of the Directory of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Chief Ataman of the UPR forces. This coin honors one of the key figures of the Ukrainian national liberation movement at the beginning of the 20th century.

Design and Features of the Commemorative Coin

The commemorative coin with a denomination of 2 hryvnias is designed with historical details in mind. The obverse features a stylized portrait of Simon Petliura against a mirrored background, as well as an element of his coat’s embroidery in the form of a branch. This design emphasizes the connection to the historical figure and the era in which he lived.

The reverse of the coin depicts a composition with the symbolism of the UPR. The central element is the trident — an armband insignia from 1919. Along the circle, the inscription “100th Anniversary of Simon Petliura’s Memorial Day” is engraved, along with a decorative wreath from Petliura’s diploma featuring the inscription “UPR”.

“His figure remains one of the key ones in the history of the Ukrainian national liberation movement.”
