Ministry of Economy Warns of Possible Suspension of Trade Visa-Free Regime with the EU from June 6

The Ministry of Economy has announced the possibility of suspending the “trade visa-free regime” with the European Union starting June 6, when the autonomous trade measures (ATM) will expire. Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Kachka stated during the conference “Trade Wars: The Art of Defense” that the worst-case scenario would be a return to the free trade regime that was in place before June 2022.

Kachka pointed out that an agreement was reached last year to end the ATM on June 6 of this year. Instead, the European Commission intended to review Article 29 of the free trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU to mutually liberalize access to markets.

“If everything happened with the autonomous trade measures as the EC planned, then we have somewhat slowed down with Article 29 due to a number of external circumstances. But I hope we will find this solution quite quickly. If not by June 6, then as quickly as possible after June 6”

,” Kachka emphasized, expressing hope that minimal issues would arise regarding access to the EU market during the negotiation of new trade liberalization conditions.

He also noted that even the pre-war trade regime with the EU is “quite good,” as tariffs were not applied to industrial goods and will remain absent for most agricultural products.
