A court in Lviv has ordered the detention of a 43-year-old local resident suspected of taking a 13-year-old child hostage. The incident occurred on May 9, when the man, noticing police officers and military personnel from the territorial recruitment center, attempted to avoid encountering them.

Circumstances of the suspect’s arrest
According to the regional prosecutor’s office, during his escape attempt, the suspect approached a group of teenagers and, threatening them with a knife, grabbed one of them — a 13-year-old girl. The man held the child, not allowing her to leave, until the military personnel from the TCC warned that they would use weapons to free the hostage if there was further resistance. Only after that did the suspect release the teenager. The child did not sustain any physical injuries.
“Fleeing from the latter, (the suspect – ed.) noticed a group of teenagers, including the minor victim, a 13-year-old child. Approaching her, he threatened her with a knife and held the child,” said Julia Seryogina, prosecutor of the Ivano-Frankivsk district prosecutor’s office.
After the incident, the man was detained and charged with illegal deprivation of liberty of a minor. The court supported the prosecutor’s request and imposed the strictest preventive measure — detention without the right to bail. The suspect declined to comment, and the prosecution representatives stated that they could not disclose additional information to avoid compromising the pre-trial investigation.
Context: mobilization and conflicts around the TCC
Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, martial law was declared in the country, and a general mobilization was announced. The Verkhovna Rada continues to extend these measures every three months. Recently, societal tension surrounding the work of the TCC has been rising: scandals, conflicts between recruitment center employees and civilians, as well as reports of possible corruption have emerged. Military personnel and government representatives indicate that much negative information is being spread as part of Russia’s information-psychological operations.
