JSW Steel begins iron ore exploration for new metallurgical plant in India

JSW Steel Limited, one of India’s leading metallurgical companies, has commenced geological exploration of the Gadchiroli iron ore deposit in the western state of Maharashtra. This is a strategic step towards the launch of a new metallurgical plant, designed to produce 25 million tons of steel annually.

Location advantages and company ambitions

JSW Steel acquired the site in Gadchiroli three years ago at auction. The company’s leader, Sajjan Jindal, emphasizes that this location is ideal for large-scale steel production due to its proximity to significant iron ore reserves. As the top manager notes, the integrated metallurgical plant will begin operations as soon as JSW Steel secures its own mines for ore extraction.

“Gadchiroli is perfectly suited for steel production due to its proximity to iron ore deposits. The integrated metallurgical plant will start operating as soon as we secure iron ore mines,” he said.

Licenses, competitors, and strategic development

JSW Steel Limited is collaborating with four other companies that share a license for the exploration and extraction of iron ore in Gadchiroli. Currently, only Lloyds Metal and Energy Limited (LMEL) is actively mining in this area.

According to Jindal, the project in Gadchiroli is part of a larger plan by JSW Steel to increase the company’s production capacity to 50 million tons of steel per year by 2030. This plan also includes the construction of a large metallurgical plant in Odisha, which is being implemented in partnership with the South Korean company Posco.
