Indonesia has received its first batch of upgraded Rafale fighters from France, which have already been delivered to the Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base in Pekanbaru. Three combat aircraft arrived on Friday as part of a large-scale defense agreement between the countries, which includes significant investments in modernizing Indonesia’s air force.

Defense Cooperation Between Indonesia and France
The transfer of the aircraft took place under a multi-billion dollar agreement that underscores the strategic partnership between Indonesia and France in the defense sector. According to Defense Ministry spokesman Rico Ricardo Sirait, the new fighters are already ready for use by the Indonesian Air Force. He stated that additional aircraft are expected to arrive within the year, although he did not specify the exact number.
“The aircraft have been delivered and are ready for use by the Indonesian Air Force,” said Defense Ministry spokesman Rico Ricardo Sirait in a statement to Reuters.
Indonesia’s Aviation Modernization Strategy
Indonesia is actively strengthening its defense capabilities and remains one of the most influential players in the global fighter jet market. In addition to the Rafale, the country is considering other options for upgrading its fleet of combat aircraft, including negotiations for the purchase of Chinese J-10s and American F-15EXs. Furthermore, Indonesia has signed a contract with Turkey for the supply of 48 KAAN fighters, which will be equipped with General Electric F-110 engines.
It was previously reported that in early January of this year, Indonesia and Pakistan were in talks regarding a possible deal to supply combat aircraft and killer drones to Jakarta, indicating further strengthening of the country’s defense sector.
