The second phase of the reclamation of the Grybovytsky landfill near Lviv is underway, where one of Ukraine’s largest landfills was previously located. Specialists are already covering the landfill with a membrane, on which a fertile layer of soil is being added. After this, they plan to plant perennial plants across the entire area of the landfill.

History of the landfill and investments in reclamation
The Grybovytsky landfill, covering an area of 38 hectares, has been in operation since 1958. Discussions regarding its closure and the construction of a waste processing plant in Lviv have been ongoing since the late 1990s. In May 2016, following a fire at the landfill, a landslide of waste occurred, resulting in the deaths of three rescuers. Subsequently, in November, the court ruled to close the landfill, leading to a large-scale waste crisis in Lviv.
In 2020, work began on the reclamation of the landfill. The European Investment Bank allocated 4.7 million euros as the second part of a loan for the implementation of this project, backed by EU guarantees. In May 2022, a biogas power plant began operating in Velyki Grybovychy, which extracts gas from the landfill and provides electricity to about 735 households.
