Tightening Control Over Bürgergeld Assistance
The government is considering making changes to the Bürgergeld social support program, which is provided to job seekers, low-income individuals, and refugees, including Ukrainians. Among the possible innovations are the establishment of clear limits on housing rent payments and control over the size of residential spaces that beneficiaries can rent.
Goals of the Reform and Economic Impact
As part of the planned reform, set to take effect in 2026, Germany is expected to implement a basic income. According to Chancellor Merz, these changes will allow the state to save more than one or even two billion euros per year.
“People who are able to work should work.”
At the same time, Merz assured that social assistance will continue to be provided to those who truly need it.
