Gas Imports to Ukraine Decreased 28 Times in April 2026

In April 2026, Ukraine imported only 29 million cubic meters of natural gas, which is 28 times less than in March of this year, when 789 million cubic meters were imported. This is also eight times less compared to April 2025, when the import volume reached 219 million cubic meters.

This is reported by Finway

“This is also the lowest monthly import value since December 2024.”

Main Reasons for the Sharp Decrease in Gas Imports

The sharp decline in import volumes is primarily related to high natural gas prices in Europe, which exceeded domestic Ukrainian prices in March 2026. The main factor for the price increase was the escalation of the war in the Middle East, which led to a halt in liquefied gas supplies from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Gas Reserves and Import Structure in April

Despite the reduction in imports, Ukraine has sufficient gas reserves in underground storage facilities, allowing it to manage without significant fuel imports from abroad for some time. Almost all imports in April came to the “customs warehouse” of Ukrainian underground storage facilities from Poland — 23.8 million cubic meters, accounting for 83% of the monthly imports. Supplies from Poland remained stable throughout the month, at a level of 0.8 million cubic meters per day.

Additionally, from April 16 to 22, Ukraine imported 4.8 million cubic meters of gas from Hungary directly into its own gas transportation system, which constituted 13% of the total imports in April.

Dynamics of Gas Imports in 2026

From the beginning of 2026 until the end of April, Ukraine imported 2.21 billion cubic meters of natural gas — this is 2.1 times more than in the same period of 2025. The largest amount of gas came from Poland — 1.03 billion cubic meters (46.8%), from Hungary — 779 million cubic meters (35.3%), from Slovakia — 280 million cubic meters (12.7%), and from the southern direction — 117 million cubic meters (5.2%).
