The three founders of the Paris-based company Mistral AI have become the first billionaires in France to amass their wealth through artificial intelligence technologies. The net worth of Arthur Mench, Timothy Lacroix, and Guillaume Lampl is estimated at approximately $1.1 billion each, attributed to their stake in the company — at least 8% of the shares.

Rapid Growth of Mistral AI’s Valuation and Investments
Following the completion of its Series C funding round, Mistral AI’s valuation exceeded $13 billion. Just at the beginning of September 2025, the startup raised $2.14 billion in investments. Key participants in this new round include ASML Holding NV, a leading manufacturer of microelectronics equipment, as well as investment funds such as DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz, and the state investor Bpifrance. The founders and employees maintain a controlling stake in the company.
Founded in 2023 in Paris, Mistral AI has quickly become one of the leading players in the European artificial intelligence market. The company develops generative language models and its own chatbot, Le Chat, which is positioned as the French equivalent of ChatGPT. Although Mistral AI still lags behind American companies like Anthropic and OpenAI in scale, it is actively strengthening its position in Europe.
Government Support and Strategic Importance of the Company
As of September 2025, Mistral AI employs around 350 staff, with offices located in Paris, London, Luxembourg, Singapore, and the USA. Since its inception, the company has secured contracts worth over $1.6 billion. Among its early investors are entrepreneur Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve and former French Minister of Digital Technologies Cédric O.
CEO Arthur Mench, a graduate of Ecole Polytechnique and a former employee of Google DeepMind, serves as the public face of the company. Chief Scientist Guillaume Lampl and CTO Timothy Lacroix have experience working at leading technology companies, including Meta.
The French government actively supports Mistral AI, viewing it as a strategic project to ensure Europe’s technological sovereignty. President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly highlighted the company as evidence of France’s ability to compete with Silicon Valley and develop its own potential in the field of artificial intelligence.
Mench emphasized in an interview that Mistral intends to remain independent. According to him, the company bears “a certain responsibility” as the only major European developer of generative AI.
It is worth noting that the artificial intelligence developer Cognition AI recently raised $400 million at a valuation exceeding $10 billion.
