The European Union (EU) is actively working on a new, 18th sanctions package against Russia, aimed at compelling Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek peace. EU leadership notes that implementing new restrictions is becoming increasingly difficult.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the preparation of the new sanctions package. She emphasized: “It is time to increase pressure – until Putin is ready for peace. Therefore, we are working on the 18th sanctions package.”
Main Components of the New Sanctions Package
According to information provided by Reuters, the new sanctions package is set to include restrictions against the Russian pipelines “Nord Stream 1” and “Nord Stream 2.” In particular, the sanctions may include:
- Strengthening restrictions against the Russian shadow fleet.
- Lowering the price ceiling on oil.
- Restrictions against the financial sector in Russia.
However, diplomatic circles indicate that achieving unanimity among the 27 EU member states for the approval of new sanctions is becoming increasingly challenging. As a result, extensive restrictions will require support from the United States.
Sanctions Preparing for Approval
Currently, the EU is also preparing to implement the 17th sanctions package against Russia, which is scheduled to be adopted at the next European Council meeting on May 20. This package is expected to include:
- Nearly 200 tankers from the Russian shadow fleet.
- 75 individuals and organizations linked to the Russian military-industrial complex.
- A possible ban on the export of chemicals to Russia that could be used for missile production.
- Restrictions on companies from other countries supplying military goods to Russia.
