Dynamics of the Hryvnia Exchange Rate Since the Beginning of the Year

The first historical minimum for the hryvnia in 2026 was recorded at the end of trading on January 5, when the official rate for January 6 was 42 hryvnias 42.08 kopecks per dollar. The following day, January 7, the rate was set at 42 hryvnias 56.34 kopecks per dollar, which also became a new minimum.

Interbank Market and Previous Stability

According to Bloomberg, on January 7, trading on the Ukrainian interbank currency market ended at 42 hryvnias 87 kopecks per dollar. This situation indicates a further weakening of the national currency amid market fluctuations and high demand for foreign currency.

“On October 3, 2023, the exchange rate shifted for the first time since July 21, 2022. For more than 14 months, the official rate remained at 36 hryvnias 57 kopecks per dollar.”

It is worth noting that for over 14 months—from July 2022 to October 2023—the official rate remained stable at 36 hryvnias 57 kopecks per dollar, but since October 2023, the hryvnia has begun to gradually depreciate.
