A 137-Meter Tall Statue of Prometheus Planned for Alcatraz at $450 Million

The CEO of Parhelion, a company specializing in Bitcoin mining, Ross Kelvin, has announced plans to build a gigantic statue of Prometheus on Alcatraz Island. The cost of this ambitious project is estimated at $450 million, and the height of the colossus will reach 137 meters (450 feet), making it one of the tallest monuments in the world.

Project Details and Its Ideological Foundation

According to Kelvin, the idea of erecting the monument originated in 2018, but its implementation was postponed during Joe Biden’s presidency. Now, with the change in the political climate, Kelvin has resumed work on the project, convinced of possible support from President Trump, who is known for his aesthetic approach to architecture.

The statue is expected to be made of a nickel-bronze alloy, allowing it to reflect sunlight differently throughout the day. The colossal Prometheus, if built, will surpass both the main span of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Statue of Liberty in height, becoming a new symbol of technological progress in the United States.

“The colossal monument to Prometheus proclaims that governments must unleash all economic dynamism to empower the hardworking individual and protect people from dehumanization and degradation of their existence. The torch that Prometheus holds high burns for freedom from collective coercion and for the freedom of personal pursuit of meaning, purpose, wonder, and creative power.”

Implementation Prospects and Additional Initiatives

To build the statue, a change in the status of Alcatraz is necessary—from a national park to a national monument, which must be approved by President Trump. Until 1963, the island had a reputation as a harsh prison, and today it is known as a tourist attraction.

The project presentation, including sketches of the colossus and plans for a future technology museum on the island, is scheduled for the end of January 2026. The implementation is overseen by the nonprofit organization American Colossus, led by Kelvin himself.

It is worth noting that recently, President Trump has been actively supporting the construction of monuments in the United States. In July 2025, the One Big Beautiful Bill came into effect, allocating $40 million for the creation of the National Garden of American Heroes with 250 statues, as well as establishing classical style as a priority in civic architecture and commencing the construction of a new ballroom in the White House.
