The Role of International Contingents in Ukraine’s Security
In a recent interview with Agence France-Presse, Zelensky noted that Ukraine seeks to see a European military contingent as a component of the system of international guarantees. Such a presence should enhance the deterrent factor and prevent a potential resumption of hostilities after a possible ceasefire.
“We would like to see a contingent closer to the front line. Of course, no one wants to be on the front line, and, of course, Ukrainians would like our partners to stand with us at the forefront,” the president emphasized.
International Support as a Guarantee of Security
Zelensky stressed that this is not about replacing Ukrainian troops in the combat zone, but rather about symbolic and practical support from partners. The presence of foreign troops is viewed as an additional security guarantee that could deter the Russian Federation from new attempts at invasion after the active phase of the war concludes.
The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly emphasized the need for clear international security guarantees that should serve as a safeguard against new aggression from the Russian Federation in the future.
