Ukrainian Weapons and Technologies: What Systems Will Ukraine Export and Why

President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced the effective start of Ukraine’s export of its own weapons and military technologies. This step has become possible due to the planned controlled export, the proceeds of which will be directed towards the procurement and production of the most critical systems for defense needs, particularly air defense systems and ammunition.

What Weapons and Military Technologies Will Ukraine Export

Among the products that are in surplus and are being prepared for export, Ukraine highlights maritime drones, electronic warfare and reconnaissance systems, ground robotic complexes, acoustic sensors, as well as various types of drones, especially FPV drones. However, it is most likely that the first items to be exported will be anti-tank missile systems and maritime drones.

The final list and timelines for export will be determined by the Ministry of Defense, taking into account the current needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Last year, the defense industry noted insufficient utilization of production capacities due to a lack of long-term state contracts. The introduction of controlled export will help partially resolve this issue and convert the surplus of certain types of products into resources for the procurement of air defense systems, 155-mm ammunition, and explosives, which are in short supply at the front.

Potential of the Defense Industry and Economic Impact

The Ukrainian Arms Manufacturers Council states that over 94% of weapons manufacturers are already ready to enter foreign markets. This indicates a significant production potential that exceeds the capabilities of state funding for procurement.

“The Ukrainian Arms Manufacturers Council reported that 94.4% of weapons manufacturers are ready to start exporting their products. They can produce more weapons than the state is able to finance.”

The National Association of Defense Industry Enterprises of Ukraine (NAUDI) estimates that through the export of military products, the state could receive up to $2 billion in additional tax revenues over the next year and a half. This will not only strengthen the economy but also enhance the country’s defense capabilities through the modernization and reinforcement of the most essential systems for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
