In the UK, a relative doused a bride with paint at her wedding due to a long-standing conflict

In the town of Maidstone (Kent, UK), the wedding ceremony of 35-year-old Gemma Monk turned into a loud scandal: a woman threw black paint on her just before she entered the registration center. The incident shocked the guests and the bride, and the reasons behind the assailant’s unexpected behavior became the subject of police and court investigations.

Details of the Incident and the Bride’s Reaction

Gemma Monk, a mother of two, had been preparing for her wedding for a long time. However, as she approached the entrance with her guests, she was attacked by an unknown woman who doused her with paint and quickly disappeared from the scene. As a result of the attack, the wedding dress was ruined, and Gemma experienced severe stress. Despite this, she decided not to cancel the ceremony: she changed into a backup dress from a friend and continued the celebration two hours later.

“We waited so long for this day. Nothing could stop me. She [the attacker — ed.] wanted the wedding not to happen. I would have walked down the aisle in just my underwear and with black paint on my face if I had to,” Gemma said.

Who is Behind the Attack and the Motives for the Crime

The police quickly identified the attacker — she turned out to be 49-year-old Antonia Eastwood, the wife of the groom’s older brother. It became clear that there had been a long-standing feud between the Monk and Eastwood families, which had only intensified after a scandal at the Eastwood family’s wedding a year before the incident. According to Gemma, she was unjustly accused of trying to “trip up” Mrs. Eastwood, after which their relationship completely deteriorated.

During the investigation, Antonia Eastwood admitted her guilt, calling her actions “an act of revenge,” but refused to make further comments in court. The court found that the attack had destroyed Gemma’s wedding dress, which she wanted to pass down to her daughter. Eastwood was sentenced to 10 months of suspended imprisonment, 12 months of supervision, 160 hours of community service, and a fine of £5,000 (almost 300,000 UAH). She was also banned from approaching Gemma Monk and her family for 10 years.

Judge Oliver Saxby emphasized that the convicted woman’s behavior ruined an important day for Gemma and her loved ones, and even if she regrets it now, she long believed that the bride deserved such treatment.

Despite the psychological trauma, Gemma Monk stated that she intends to move forward and create new happy memories with her husband and children. She admitted that she would not forgive the attacker but is trying to leave this story in the past.
