Russian-Iranian cooperation in the drone sector

According to analysts, contacts between Tehran and Moscow regarding the transfer of drones began shortly after Israel and the United States conducted attacks against Iran. The operation to supply drones started in early March and is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

“Moscow began its supplies in early March, and they are expected to be completed by the end of the month,” Western intelligence reports, according to The Independent

Although official sources do not disclose the exact model of the drones, sources speaking to the Financial Times suggest that Russia is sending Iran the “Geran-2” drones, which are a Russian modification of the well-known Iranian Shahed-136.

Iran’s requests and the political backdrop

In addition to drones, the Iranian side has approached the Kremlin with a request for modern air defense systems, British media sources report. Against this backdrop, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly stated that Russia is providing Iran with intelligence data.

Furthermore, according to Politico, the Kremlin proposed a deal to the United States: to cease the transfer of intelligence information to Iran in exchange for stopping the provision of intelligence data about Russia to Ukraine. This proposal was made during unofficial negotiations between representatives of Moscow and Washington.
