Differences in Loss Estimates

The General Staff did not specify which particular ship or boat was destroyed during the day. Meanwhile, earlier sources reported damage to Russian military ships in the port of Novorossiysk, but the Russian military command did not comment on this information.

Official Moscow does not disclose its losses, having last publicly named the number of dead only in September 2022 – at that time, it was about 5,937 individuals. According to Russian journalists, as of February 24, 2026, over 200,000 Russian military deaths have been identified based on open sources: obituaries, social media posts, and missing persons announcements.

International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate the total losses of the Russian Federation to be significantly higher. For instance, in December 2025, a NATO representative noted that the number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could reach 1.15 million individuals.

Regarding the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Kyiv has long refrained from disclosing such data; however, currently, approximately once a year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky releases this information. In early February 2026, he reported that since the beginning of the full-scale war, about 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died. Additionally, there is a significant number of missing persons.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, noted that in 2025, it was possible to reduce the number of losses among Ukrainian soldiers by 13%, although he did not disclose details.
