Poland Extends Assistance to Ukrainian Refugees Until 2026, EU Concludes Temporary Protection by 2027

Польський президент востаннє погодився продовжити допомогу українським біженцям, а ЄС підготував план завершення тимчасового захисту з 2027 року.

The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, has signed a law that extends the legal stay of Ukrainian citizens who left the country due to the war until March 4, 2026. This document aims to regulate the further status of Ukrainians in Poland and establishes new conditions for receiving social assistance, including mandatory employment and education for children in Polish schools.

Latest Extension of Special Assistance

As noted by the head of the president’s office, Zbigniew Bogucki, the adopted law will be the “last” within the framework of special support for Ukrainians. After the law expires, Polish authorities plan to transition to general rules for foreigners residing in the republic. As of September 2025, at least 1.5 million Ukrainian citizens who have benefited from this protection are living in Poland.

“With the adoption of the law, Poland plans to ‘transition to normal conditions,’ applying the same rules to Ukrainian citizens as to other foreigners living in the republic,” emphasized Bogucki.

EU Plans for Ending Temporary Protection

Meanwhile, the European Union has developed a strategy for the gradual conclusion of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees, which will be in effect until March 4, 2027. The plan outlines two main scenarios for Ukrainians: obtaining national residence permits in EU countries for those who have already integrated, or voluntary return to their homeland. Special conditions have been developed for families with children and citizens with special needs.

To effectively inform Ukrainian citizens about upcoming changes and opportunities, special Unity Hubs will be established to provide consultations and assistance in transitioning to the new status.
