Japan has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into steel imports from China, South Korea, and Taiwan

Japan has announced the start of an anti-dumping investigation into the import of major steel products from China, South Korea, and Taiwan. The country’s Ministry of Trade and Finance reported that the review will focus on hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils, steel strips, and sheet steel.

Japanese metallurgists initiated the investigation

The opening of the investigation was initiated by key steel producers in Japan, including Nippon Steel and JFE Steel. The process is expected to last approximately one year. In a February application, Japanese metallurgical companies emphasized that imported steel products are being sold on the domestic market at prices that can be up to 50% lower than the usual cost. The flat rolled products under investigation are widely used in the production of automobiles, household appliances, machinery, and packaging industries.

Trade tensions and Japan’s next steps

The Japan Iron and Steel Federation highlighted the growing need for protective trade measures to support the national industry, which is suffering from a global surplus of production capacity in metallurgy.

“In Japan, the need for appropriate trade protective measures is also becoming increasingly urgent,” emphasized the Japan Iron and Steel Federation in a statement following the government’s announcement.

The association noted that it will continue to monitor violations in the steel import market, not limited to the products currently under investigation. If necessary, industry representatives will consult with the government to implement new trade protection measures.

It is worth noting that last year Japan already initiated an investigation into the import of certain types of coated steel and stainless steel from China, South Korea, and Taiwan, indicating a tightening of control over the import of metal products.
