Hungary may support Western sanctions against Russia if Donald Trump decides to implement them to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for refusing to pursue a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine. This was stated by Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Szijjarto, who previously described the European Union’s sanctions against Russia as “laughable” and ineffective, acknowledged that Budapest’s position may change. According to him, everything depends on the further development of the situation. In particular, the Hungarian minister linked the possibility of imposing sanctions to potential actions by the U.S., which had warned the Kremlin about implementing secondary sanctions on Russian oil if Putin does not facilitate a peace agreement.
“But if this positive scenario does not materialize, we will have to discuss it,” he noted.
When asked whether Hungary would support EU sanctions if they became part of Trump’s negotiating strategy, Szijjarto expressed hope that peace between Russia and Ukraine could be achieved, and the need for new sanctions would disappear.
