The National Bank of Ukraine set the official exchange rate of the hryvnia against the dollar on January 7 at 42 hryvnias 56.34 kopecks. This marks a new historical minimum for the national currency against the US dollar.

Hryvnia Exchange Rate Dynamics in January
As a result of trading on January 5, 2026, the hryvnia reached a new minimum for the first time this year. On January 6, the official rate was 42 hryvnias 42.08 kopecks per dollar. According to Bloomberg, trading on the interbank foreign exchange market in Ukraine on January 6 ended at 42 hryvnias 55 kopecks per dollar.
Prolonged Stability and Sharp Depreciation
Significant changes in the exchange rate occurred after a long period of relative stability. From July 21, 2022, to October 3, 2023, the official rate remained at 36 hryvnias 57 kopecks per dollar for more than 14 months. Only in October 2023 did the hryvnia begin to gradually lose ground against the dollar, which eventually led to the renewal of historical minimums at the beginning of 2026.
